Botox Pain Management Injections
Botulinum toxin type A is known best as Botox and is used to relax muscles by blocking nerve signals that cause muscle contractions. While Botox is used for treating cosmetic issues like frown lines, it is also very beneficial for reducing pain, migraines and spasms. At Medici Spine & Pain, we incorporate Botox injections into many injection treatment plans to give patients relief from pain caused by muscle tightness and spasms.
Botox injections work by blocking neurotransmissions to muscles. When the brain sends a signal for a muscle to contract, Botox can block the receptors in the nerves from receiving these signals. This can result in a relaxed muscle, reducing pain or dysfunction. Exact placement of injections is critical. The right nerves and muscles must be targeted to achieve the desired results.
Conditions Treated with Botox
Chronic pain is often associated with muscle and nerve disorders. Muscle contractions and tightness can trigger pain symptoms, which is why Botox injections often can offer relief. Some of the conditions that may respond well to Botox treatment include:
- Migraines
- Chronic muscle spasms
- Cervical dystonia that causes neck pain
- Myofascial pain
- Nerve disorders that cause muscle spasms
Botox injections can be completed in a quick office visit and usually have no pain or side effects. There may be slight bruising at the injection point, but this dissipates quickly. The muscle relaxation effect can take up to a week to occur and may last 3-4 months before another treatment is needed to sustain results.
Botox injections are one of the many different treatment modalities we offer at Medici Spine & Pain for chronic pain management. If you have suffered from ongoing pain from muscle spasms or migraines, Botox injections may be one of the treatments we recommend for managing your pain.
