Bursa Injections
Bursa are fluid-filled sacs that provide a cushion between muscles and tendons during joint movement. Injuries and other conditions, like arthritis and bursitis, can cause inflammation of the bursa, resulting in pain. If you have joint pain caused by inflammation or swelling of the bursa, one injection treatment option is a bursa injection. Our medical team at Medici Spine & Pain can identify the cause of chronic pain, including swollen or inflamed bursa.
Bursa injections use a local anesthetic and steroid to offer immediate and long-term relief for joint pain. The injections are carefully placed into the inflamed bursa. Imaging through x-rays is often used to direct the placement of the injection to the correct area. The local anesthetic in the injection can offer immediate pain relief while the steroids combat and relieve inflammation. The steroid interaction can require a few days to dissipate the inflammation but can offer long-term pain relief.
Who is a Good Candidate for Bursa Injections?
Injuries and inflammatory diseases can irritate and inflame the bursa in the joints. Our medical team will determine whether or not a swollen bursa is contributing to joint pain and if a bursa injection could be included in your treatment plan. Bursa injections can offer permanent or long-term relief for some patients, especially when combined with other treatments. If the inflammation to the bursa returns, additional injections may be performed every few months to sustain pain relief.
