Sciatica (Lumbar Radiculopathy)
The largest nerves in the body are the two sciatic nerves that travel from the lower spine through the pelvis to the legs. These large nerves are the pathway for signals sent through the spinal cord, affecting the lower (lumbar) back, buttocks and legs. When there is compression or pressure on this nerve, it is called lumbar radiculopathy, or sciatica. Our pain physicians at Medici Spine & Pain can help diagnose sciatica and provide effective treatment to give patients relief from chronic pain issues.
Sciatica occurs when inflammation, injury or disease creates pressure or irritation on the sciatic nerve. Usually, only one of the sciatic nerves is affected, so symptoms are on one side of the body. Sciatica symptoms include:
- Radiating pain through the lower back, buttocks and leg on one side of the body
- Weakness in the hip or leg on one side
- A burning, tingling or numbness traveling from the lower back through the pelvis and upper leg
Sciatica generally affects the upper thigh but can radiate down as far as the foot. The symptoms may become worse when standing after sitting for long periods. In severe cases, sciatic pain and weakness can make walking or moving impossible until the symptoms subside.
Treatments for Lumbar Radiculopathy
Sciatica does not have a treatment, but by finding the cause of the lumbar radiculopathy, the source can be treated. There are several lower spine and back conditions that cause sciatica, including:
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Piriformis syndrome
- Spondylolisthesis
- Spinal stenosis
Treating the underlying cause can reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve and offer relief from sciatica. Our team at Medici Spine & Pain can help determine the source of sciatica pain. They will find the least invasive treatment option to alleviate symptoms and improve the overall health of our patients.
