SI Joint Injections
The sacroiliac joints (SI) are connected to the spine and pelvic bone. They help absorb the weight of the upper body. Like all the joints in the body, they can be susceptible to degenerative diseases like arthritis or other types of injuries or damage. SI joint dysfunction can cause back, hip, groin and leg pain, which is often misdiagnosed or attributed to other causes. SI joint injections can help diagnose the source of chronic pain and offer relief. This helpful injection treatment is available in the Atlanta area at Medici Spine & Pain clinics.
There are many different sources of lower back, hip, groin or leg pain. Sciatica, herniated lumbar discs, pubic symphysis injury or other issues can cause pain in these areas. This makes it difficult to pinpoint SI joint dysfunction. When creating a treatment plan for chronic pain, our pain physicians at Medici Spine & Pain first must determine the source. SI joint injections are one option to help find out if lower back, groin or leg pain is due to SI joint dysfunction.
Relieving Localized Pain with SI Joint Injections
SI joint injections are guided by imaging to target the suspected SI joint and deliver a local anesthetic and anti-inflammatory steroid to the area. The local anesthetic can offer immediate pain relief. If the SI joint is responsible for causing the lower back, groin or leg pain, the patient may feel an immediate reduction in pain. The local anesthetic wears off within a few hours, but the steroid can reduce inflammation for longer lasting relief. If the SI joint injection is successful in relieving the pain, it can identify SI joint dysfunction as the source and help improve efforts for a long-term treatment plan.
