Spinal Decompression Therapy
Spinal compression is a natural phenomenon. The vertebrae in the spine are stacked with spinal discs between them, with weight and gravity pushing them down from top to bottom. Over the years, the spine can put pressure on spinal discs, nerves and other components of the spine. For some people with spinal disc damage, sciatica and other back pain, spinal decompression therapy is a helpful treatment to reduce pain and improve spinal health. We offer spinal decompression therapy at Medici Spine & Pain as one of our many treatment modalities for pain management.
How Does Spinal Decompression Therapy Work?
Spinal decompression uses a motorized table to stretch and relax the spine in a controlled manner. The patient is strapped to the table, and the mechanism moves to stretch the spine, then relax. The sessions usually last up to 45 minutes, with a series of treatments scheduled a few times a week over several weeks. The treatment is not painful. Patients feel a slight stretching of the spine but should not have any discomfort.
The principle behind spinal decompression therapy is to relieve pressure on the spinal discs and nerves. By stretching and relieving pressure on the spinal discs, they have a chance to reform to their original shape. This can be beneficial for bulging or herniated discs that are putting pressure on nerves surrounding the spine. It can also relieve pressure to improve circulation to the discs to stimulate healing and repair.
Spinal decompression therapy may be recommended for those with herniated or bulging discs that are causing chronic pain. It is usually combined with other treatments to help improve spinal health and alleviate chronic pain in the back, neck and legs.
If you suffer from chronic pain or sciatica pain caused by bulging or herniated discs in the spine, you may benefit from spinal decompression therapy. Contact us at Medici Spine & Pain to schedule an exam and consultation to discuss beginning a treatment plan to address your chronic pain.
